PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS
THE requests based on resolutions carried by the local branch of the Farmers' Union, which were put before the lion. H. Atmore as representing the Government yesterday, were of a practical and helpful nature. They were sympathetically received by the Minister who can be relied upon to do everything possible to expedite their consideration by the Government and the Central Relief Committee. At first sight that committee would appear to be an unwieldy one hut it may be taken for granted that once a clear line of general policy is laid down the actual administrative details and allocation of tho funds in relief of distress and in the general work of restoration will be entrusted to a comparatively small executive empowered to act. It was satisfactory to have the clear assurance of Mr Atmore that none of the relief funds will be diverted to opening up roads. As he emphasised, that is a matter for tho county councils and the Government to deal with. It is one, too, that must bo taken in band immediately so that access can be obtained to farms and homes which require urgent attention.
