AUSTRALIA'S GROWTH
ESTIMATE OF POPULATION COMPARISON WITH DOMINION According to the tyilimate- of the. Com monwoallh Statistician, the. population of Australia at 31st December was 0,356,786, an increase during the year of 101,952. The corresponding estimate for New Zealand was 1,466,952, showing an increase of 16,062. Of the Australian increase, 71,700 was due to excess uf births over deaths, and 27,232 to net immigration. New Zealand gained 16,389 by natural increase anil only 473 by excess of immigration. Following is a summary of the respective) increases in the hist, three, years:- -
The population of Australia, has been increased in the period by 5.75 per cent., whereas the expansion in New Zealand has been only 4.60 per cent. Had the Dominion increased its population at the Australian rate, the total would have been 80,570. New South Wales now has a population of 2,445,280, Victoria 1,760,689, Queensland 916689, South Australia 579,348, Western Australia 405.873, and Tasmania 216,563. The balance, of 12,069 is in TTie Northern Territory and the Federal capital. During 1928 the greatest increase relatively was in Western Australia, which gained 13,581. The population of the six capital cities now exceeds 3,000,000 for the first time, the estimate of 3.019.248 showing an increase of 73,001, leaving only 28,931 for tho whole area outside the capitals. They now contain 47.64 per cent, of the total population, as compared with 38.03 per cent, at the .1911 census.
