At the Leichhardt Stadium', for the welter-weight championship of Australia, Wally Hancock, 10.31 (holder), knocked', out Charlie Purdy, the-New Zealander, 10.(51, in the twelfth round. It was an exciting, and in some respects, a sensational encounter, with Hancock always dangerous. Purdy began cautiously. Hancock was confident, but Purdy warmed up Jo his task in the third round, and although he took a lot of punishment, he himself gave goodly .measure. Hancock used his left freely' and wildly, often connecting with Purdy’s .chill and nose. > . ■. During the fifth, round the.- New Zealander was groggy and, was in a similar condition in the eighth.
