MIDNIGHT CHASE
STOLEN CAR RECOVERED FIRING OF REVOLVER SHOTS A long pursuit through the dark at 60 miles an hour, pistol play by an inspector of police, and a short, sharp chase on foot by three constables, were preludes to the recovery of a. stolen motor ear. by the eastern suburbs wireless night patrol in Sydney a few nights ago. The stolen car was the property of Mr'Herhert Wilson, of Randwick. When it was missed the police were communicated with. The message was picked up by the patrol, and 10 minutes later the missing car was sighted in Pitt street. \ The patrol at once gave chase, and the driver of the stolen car, scenting trouble, promptly “stepped on it,” and ■was ouiekly in George street, and next into Harris street. Both cars were now doing their best, but the police car was the faster, and gradually gained till, when nearing Fig street, Inspector Reilly was near enough to shout an order to the fleeing driver to stop. But the order, thrice repeated, went unheeded, and the inspector drew his revolver. Three shots were fired. The fugitive, however, declined to be thus intimidated, and sped through the night, evolving tactics as he went. At last he reached Bowman street, near Glebe Island bridge. Into this thoroughfare lie turned, and slowing down, jumped and ran, with him his passenger. a young woman. Three policemen simultaneously leaped from the patrol car, and the chase was soon over. A constable*secured the woman, and two other constables ran down the man.
