MEMORIAL SERVICE IN CATHEDRAL AT TIME OF FUNERAL The Bishop of Nelson will conduct a Memorial Service in the Cathedral at 10.30 o’clock on Thursday morning, the hour fixed for the funeral of Mr Massey. LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICES All Government offices in Nelson, except those required for the conduct of urgent public business will be closed until after the funeral. The Customs Ollice will close only on Thursday. The Nelson Rugby Union forwarded a telegram of sympathy to Mrs Massey. At the ordinary meeting of the Tahumtiiui Town Board last evening feeling reference was made by the chairman to the death of the Prime Minister, and it was resolved to send a message of sympathy to Mrs Massey and family. At a meeting of Scoutmasters of the Nelson Scout District held last evening, a resolution of condolence jf.is passed with Mrs Massey and the family of the late Mr Massey, the honoured VicePresident of the New Zealand section of Flu: Boy Sco-uts’ Association, whose Scoutlike example has been an inspiration to every Scout. REGIMENTAL BAND’S SYMPATHY At a meeting of the Regimental Band held last evening in the band room, a motion of sympathy was passed to be forwarded to Mrs Massey and relatives in their and the country’s bereavement. MESSAGE FROM ACTING-PRIME MINISTER The Mayor of Nelson (Mr IV. Lock) iias received the following reply from the Acting-Prime Minister in reply to the telegram of sympathy sent on behalf of the City:— “My colleagues and I desire to express to you, councillors, and citizens our gratitude for your kindly message uf sympathy in the great loss suffered bv the Government and the country.” FRANCIS BELL. -Sir Francis Bell sent- the following telegram to the Member - for Nelson yesterday afternoon :—■ “Harry At more, Esq., ALP., .Nelson. My colleagues and I desire to express our gratitude for vour kindly message i f sympathy in the great loss suffered by the Government and the country.” THE MURCHISON COUNTY CHAIRMAN The Chairman of the Murchison County Council. Mr Moynahan, wired as follows to the Acting Prime Minister: ‘■Residents of Murchison County received the news of Mr Massov s death with sincere regret. We wish you to express to Mrs Massey and her family our deepest sympathy, and we join with the rest of the Dominion in mourning the loss of a true friend of the people of all classes. With the vest of the Empire we feel a deep sense of loss of one of its fore-most statesmen. Ilis high ideals his unblemished record of setvice, his broad and sympathetic outlook on domestic and imperial questions, and his intense patriotism, will live long after him as a line example and an inspiration to our future statesmen. His motto, “Ary country first,” may well he adopted by every true British subject throughout the Empire. Peace to the ashes of a great and good man. 1 feel that no words of mine can adequately express what we in this Dominion all owe to our late illustrious leader, and I feel confident- his great services will he better appreciated by all classes after he is gone than when he was serving them so faithfully and well.” V '
