NELSON SOUTH

’ ACTIVITY OF RESIDENTS Arising out of a public mooting held last Monday evening by residents of Nelson South, two resolutions were before the Council last night, dealing with grading Snow's Hill and tar-seal-ing Waimea Hoad. The resolution regarding Snows Hill was as follows: — “That this public meeting of residents of Nelson South respectfully ask the City Council to improve the grade of Waimea Road by removing the crown of Snow’s Hil and that a sufficient- sum of money be placed on the, estimates this year to 'do the necessary work.” *t ‘Jn regard to the foregoing wrote Mr A, Robinson, “l should like to make it clear that the removal of the hill is not asked for, but it is felt, that by lowering the top of the bill, commencing at tne junction with Waimea Street and placing the greater portion of the spoil in the dip beyond the bill, a very much better grade could be secured at comparatively little expense. If that were done, not- only would the grade be improved but- for all time the road would cost, less to maintain; properties adjacent would benefit and by increasing in value, would also increase the Council s revenue. In-view of the largo uinoiuit of loan money that will be raised for improvements in other parts of the town and for which, tlm residents ot Nelson South worked and voted, they feel they are not making an unreasonable request in respectfully asking that Ihe Council will seriously consider giving effect to the above resolution.” An attached memo by the Engineer Stated that, the expense would not warrant. the benefit to be derived. CV Plum agreed. He moved that the letter be received. The grade was cjuile an easy one. and lie saw no reason for interfering. Seconded by Cr Nightingale. Personall lie thought there were far more urgent- works. Cr Wigzell said be considered Cr Plum was under a misapprehension. It was simply asked that the crown of the road be removed. If this were done it would prove a great benefit to users of tiie road. He moved an amendment that the matter be referred to committee.

Seconded bv Cr Watson. Cr Harley said the matter had aroused very considerable attention from ratepavers 111 that portion of the city, and lie thought their request. should at least be given attention by the committee-

Cr Neale agreed with the. amendment. Personally be did not know whether be was in favour of re-grading the hill or not, but be would be opposed to cutting the hill away altogether. The Mayor, while agreeing that the letter should be referred to committee, said be was not sympathetic towards the proposal, as there were more urgent works. He would not mind, however, spending a few pounds ; but at present lie could see no reason ior touching the hill. In reply to Cr Plum, the Engineer said it would mean regrading about three chains. It. would also be necessary to move the gas and water mains. The amendment was put and carried, and becoming the substantive motion was .aI so passed. TAR SEALING The resolution dealing with tar-seal-ing was as follows “That this meeting respectfully urge cn the City Council the necessity for proceeding with the “tar-sealing” ol .Waimea Road without, delay.” Mr A. Robinson in a covering letter gt a ted : “I have to say that rather more than two years ago and again in December last, very largely signed petitions were placed before the Council asking that this work lie proceeded wTTTr, and I am informed that in reply to the former petition a promise was made that the work would be done and that provision would lie allowed for the cost in the following year’s estimate. However, it is apparent- to allf who use this important thoroughfare that the road is disintegrating and that it will well repay early attention.” The Engineer stated that no metal was available at present. The letter was referred to Committee.
