One of Hie most spectacular fires seen in the city of late drew hundred* of people (o the vicinity of Cuba and Vivian Streets last nigld. when a limber and joinery factory, Hie property of S. Knight, builder and contractor, was totally destroyed, ihe damage running into thousands of pounds. Tins Wellington lire brigade from the. central station and Thorndon made a magnificent save not only of adjoining pro perties, but of valuable stocks of tunnel' in the yard. .Houses in Cuba Street had the tinrrowest of escapes from being swallowed up in the belching flames The whole promises, covering an area nf 50 yards square, wore soon completely involved, shavings, tim her. oils, varnishes, and other inflammable material causing the flames to rise mountains high, presenting a magnificent. but terrifying spectacle. Tire building and the contents of Hie factory were insured, but the amount is not yet ascertained.
Knight’s building, which was destroyed by fire last night, was insured i.n the South British for £IB7O ; the machinery was covered in the same office for’ £ISOO, and timber and stock in the Atlas lor £4OO. It is understood the police are inquiring as to the cause of the fire.
