CLOSING OF BRIGHTWATER BRIDGE

THE action of the Waimea County Council in closing the Wairna Bridge nt. Brightwater is most serious for the district, but it is a step that only madmen would fail to take. The Council is morally responsible for tho safety ot the travelling public, and to have allowed people to risk their lives simply because great inconvenience would be caused, would have been criminal folly. U is also satisfactory to note that the Council is going straight out for a new concrete bridge. The cost is* a little heavy now, blit it means the saving of tho money that would otherwise be spent on repairs, which could only he of a very temporary nature. What the public does expect, however, is that the work will he pushed on without delay. Doubtless there will he a good many vexatious formalities to go through, hut every effort should ho made by tile Council, the Highways Board, and the Government Department eon corned, to go ahead at full speed.
