Bertie Best, aged 25. appeared at the Police Court charged with wounding Gertrude Best, his sister, on April lbth, with intent lo do grievous bodily harm. Gertrude Best said she was a single woman, 26 years of age. .She kept house for accused at Hamilton. In March last- she was frightened of her brother, who was sometimes sober and sometimes drunk. She came to Auckland on April 10th. Accused followed her but she refused to again keep house for him. Jle struck her on the face. Witness kept company with Mr Scholz. to whom accused objected, saving that Scholz was a German. On April 14th accused accompanied witness, her sister Eileen" and Scholz to the theatre. Accused picked a row there with witness, in consequence of which she and Scholz left the theatre. Accused, who had had some liquor, was calling Scholz a Ger man and witness a prostitute. Alter that, accused and Scholz hail a light. Next dav about 7.30 p.m. accused came twice to the place where witness was employed as a waitress. She was told by the woman in charge of the kitchen to take him home. Witness told accused she would not go back to the restaurant because he had made a scene lhere and she was going to look for Scholz. Accused rushed her and she fell, her throat being cut and slashed. She rushed into a shop. Accused was drunk, hut knew what he was doing. The reason ho assaulted her was because she was going with .Scholz. He alleged immorality between herself and Scholz. She was still being treated as an out patient of the hospital.
