An Italian communique says:—J he enemy artillery is Active at Cimone. We destroyed strong Assiago entrenchments, and repulsed an attack on the new position at Mount Sief. A semi-official statement says the eastern jxart. of the Carso plateau gradually widens southwards. Hence the enemy's persistent attempts to retake %San (-Irado di Merna and other important hills, because any serious extension- of the successive Austrian defensive lines further to the rear would necessitate the employment of larger bodies of troops. which the Austrians have been obliged t-o withdraw to other points.
