The (total war expenditure is estimated at £85,299,500. In arriving at this it is estimated that the average strength of', the forces during 19J6-17 will "be 287,132, and' the cost of maintaining an average of 50,000 m in Australia £11,882,500. War pensions the previous year cost and the estimate for the current "year" is £1,000,000. Military expenditure last year was £83,949,104, -and this year's estimate' is £73,670,616. The estimated 1 public, debt on June 30, 1917, as' £175;587;000, ofwhioli the -war .debt embraces £141,789,479.
