ANNUAL A'PPEALThe Salvation Army's annual self-de-nial appeal is now Ibeing made in the interests of • their social and missionary operations; This work of rescue audi amelioration of the needly classes, of men and women in New Zealand has grown during recent years to quite a formidable endeavour. 'Social work is toeing carried on amongst boys and girls, men and women in- ho less, than 20 institutions of one character and another. Its far-reaching influences extend! from the deserted child in arms to the confirmed' drunkard, or habitual, criminal. : Homes for boys and' girls have beeri; established at Uussell, Eltham, Wellington andl Temuka; whilst similar institutions! are to be found in Auckland, Wellington and GVliddlemarch for girls. ; ; : Rescue and maternity homes' are doing useful and efficient service on behalf, of needy women in Auckland, Gisborne, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch, and Duned in. Ex-prisoners are ibeing cared , for in institutions situated) in Auckland and) Chrisftohuxch. Another branch of social work is being carried on amongst men and women inebriates at homes situated' in the Hauraki Gulf, on .'the isllands of Rotoroa and Pakatoa. Last year 147 women were received! into rescue homes for women and) 2(4-2 cases passed' through the various maternity homes. Some 44 boys and .girls were received into homes for ohildiren, whilst afboufc; 600 men and women , were admitted ; into Prison Gate and industrial homes, 62 of these cases uomihg direct from the police -courts and 300 odtd of the others either came direct from prison or were ex-prisoners. 1 . !
