IN" the science oil naval architecture Britain lias always led .the way, alike in merchant awd fighting ships. To this traditional superiority .there has been addled during the period of the war the knowledge gained by a close analysis of the information available regarding tire influence on design! of modern tactics, as wel las by an investigation of the effects of latatek. The newer ships, says Engine eering, are • greatly siiperior in every ' element of fighting efficiency to those of former days. .As to the rapidity,.of constraction, the achievements have far surpassed those of peace time.- Some of the o-reaiest ships yet conceived liave heen ibuilit well within) 18 months frami the date when the tactical conditions to be met in design were first enunciated hy the naval authorities; in normal times the pen'od reqtiired would have been quite double. This rapid' construction has been got fi.rst by the organisation of the shipbuilding works in order to economise 1 ah our, to ensure that ..the maximum mimiber of men may 'be employed on the ship without each getting tin, the other's way, and; 'by the co-ordination of the works of"different departments, so. as to ensure the maxintconj of output in a given time. 'Many shipbuilding firms are to-day turning out most satisfactory warships which, before the war had no
kirowledgo of Admiralty •conditions. This has been achieved by the In.terehango of valuable hints, and even- .by the transfer of experienced workers from mio yardto another.
