ENEMY GAS ATTACK AT LAKE NAROTZ
PETROGRAB, Sept. 23. A communique states that the enemy-south-west of Lake Narotz launched' a gas attack, lasting two hours. - Subsequent attacks in dense columns were repelled. I ; The 'communique makes no mention of the Halicz fighting, but unofficial reports state that the battle is continuous •and characterised by, violence. General Gherbatcheff's troops, fortifying captured German positions, were ex--posed to incessant counter-attacks for 48 hours, i The only result was that the Russians captured three- more enemy lines. - v ; The -ground, is covered with German corpses and wounded, whiah it is impossible to move owing to the stress of the fighting. .' One wood overlooking the banks of-the VaraiAoka changed hands six times before the. Russians finally captured it.;
