HONOURS FOR NEW ZEALANDERS

MILITARY CROSSES AND D.C MEDALS.

(Rec. Sept. 23, 11.15 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 22.

The following- New Zealanders have been awarded the Military Cross :—Captain John Cowles. of the Rifle Brigade, for gallantly leading a raid wherein 33 of the enemy were killed and only seven New Zealanders were wounded . Captain Alfred Powley, Rifle Brigade. In a trench raid, though the ■•party was heavily encumbered by 80 wounded, one (dead, and nine prisoners. Captain Powlev got all his men in safely. Lieutenant Philip Ellis, Field Artillery, for assisting and removing a large amount of ammunition and high explosives when the gun epaulemenfcs ignited. He also removed the gun and ■prevented the spread of the fire. He was under shell fire all the time, and his own ammunition was exploding. Lieutenant Edward KiWblewhite, Wellington Regiment. He took command when the senior officer was injured, rallied the men, drove out the enemy, and advanced to positions. Distinguished Conduct Medals have been awarded as follows?: To Private Frost, Wellington Regiment, for af--sistin.fr an officer to cover the withdrawal of raiders. He twice passed the enemy's wire and rescued two wounded men, Privates Lepper and McCormick.

To Private Nimmo, Rifle Brigade, for bringing- in wounded under heavy fire. To Private Potter. Wellington- Resident, for gallantry in leading the way in a raid on any enemy trench.
