PARIS, Sept. 22. The Germans yesterday sustained on the Somme the bloodiest defeats since the 'beginning of the offensive. French, airmen observed a great massing of men and artillery while the weather held up. The Allies prepared, and in the result the Germans suffered the heaviest losses since the terrible Douaii-mont-Vaux battles. North of the Somme the fighting lasted from seven in the morning until seven in the evening. Six divisions in compact bodies assaulted the French. and were heavily punished by machine gun and artillery fire beforo they came in sight of our trenches. The battle was fiercest in the centre, at Bonchavcsnes. the Bois I'Abbe, and Combles. Two Prussian battalions were put out of action before Le Priez Wood, and six others further .south. An artillery officer, speaking of the hellish inferno. said the road from Combles to Rancourt was a charnel house, the corpses "being piled high on each side. The troops were sacrificed without result.
