Amongst the letters dealt with were the following : From Under-Secretary Public Works Department, declining to exempt We"ka street, from section 117 of the Public Works Act, 1908, as a 50-feet street was desirable there. —Referred; to Works Committee: From Town 'Clerk, Motueka, requesting permission for City Engineer to consult with Motueka Borough Council re road machinery.—Granted. From Mts S. Blick, Brook street, offering to erect cart bridge over creek outside her property if Council will give 'her two stringers.—Accepted. From Mrs M. M. Oalder, requesting removal of fence on Council property preventing access to her premises, Queen"s ( Drive.—[Referred to Worklj Committee, Engineer to report. » From Mrs Hoi-ton, requesting permission to 'graze cows in Hastings street. — Declined. From Mr J. Piper requesting ths Council to accept a deposit of £25 for maintenance of a to L. McLean in the Wiakapuaka 'Cemetery. —Accepted. From Oerk Waimea County Council inviting the Council to join in a test case re deposit of spoil in the harbour. — Dealt with later in the meeting. From Secretary Marine Department stating inability to send an expert to Nelson to"confer with the City Engineer and County Engineer as to deposit of spoil in the 'harbour, and stating that the dispute was one that should be left to the local bodies interested to settle. From Assistant-Under-Secretary Department of Lands and Survey as to cutting of trees on public domains, and asking that the Council consult with the Department before cutting trees in domains.

Mackenzie, forwarding correspondence from the TJnderSecretarv of internal Affairs referring to The' Belgian Otelief Fund, the important point being that Nelson province stood alone in not pay in- quota to help Belgium The Under-Secretary stated that £l27' was required 'to complete Nelson s September quoto.-Referred to Finance Committee.

WORKS OOMM-mSE'-S- REPORT. The Commit/tee reported, inter alia : On letter from residents Queens Road reWtiins? repairs: That the road be pXh'dandX wheel ruts filled B wjg river gravel.—As to widening Rocks Road: That on account of the expense the Committee is not .favourable to the proposal, but has no objection to a loan noil of the ratepayers being taken provided the Waimea County Courunl is also willing to take a poll of their ratepayers. Amended to term* of 'Finance Committee's report.—As to removal of debris from Rocks Road : That Mr Dunn be offered Is 4id per yard for removing the debris, the Council reserving the rrghWo remove anv of. the spoil that it thanks fit. _\s to Inspector of Nuisances report re rubbisli on -North Road: That the roadway be fenced off leaving an opening; ioi pedestrians. Referred back to •Committee a footpath be formed across the railway provided the Railway authorities will give their consent.—As to nuisance Parere street: That proceedings be taken to have the nuisance abated. FINANCE .COMMITTEE'S REPORT.. The 'Committee reported :—As to Rocks Road • That the matter stand over until «uch time as the (Railway Department is approached with a view to sharing the cost of widening the road and bringing the railway along same.—As to swimming baths: Th'at the matter stand, oyer until the question of the Maitai lanas has been finally settled. Adopted. EN'GIXHER'S REPORT. The City Engineer (Mr J. <J. I.ittleiohn) reported: — . _, , Streets and Footways.—Repairs to Collincrwoodi street and some patching in Tasman street have been proceeded with. The culvert across Brook! street at Andrew's has been put is. and repairs to. lane off St. Vincent street have been completed. I propose to start tarring operations next week. Drainage.—Two of the o.d sewers became blocked' with willow roots and two of the new sewers with debris brought down by the re.'ant flood A jor:t in the 1 delivery pipe of No. 2 ejector blew out and caused the flooding of the ejector chamber. It was necessary to pet the ' steam pump to work in order to get the chamber clear. Plans have been preparI ed for the ■■proposed- new sewers m Alton street and Van Diemau street. _ Water • The service has remained satisfactory during the past fortnight The main in Vanguard street was split, and nn Collinmvood street bridge a joint was found to"be leakiu- badly. A number of services -which became blocked with, debris have been cleared. Places of Public Relation. —Hanbj Park has been cleaned up and the bridge leading thereto is being re-erectedi Miscellaneous.—Five building permits for work valued at £1793 have been issued. ABATTOIR REPORT. The Abattoir (Manager (Mr G. W. Mitchell) reported the following statement oi the stock slaughtered diunng the tortnirrht:—63 cattle, .11 calves, 833 sheep, 8 lambs, 23 pigs ; total. 938. Two sheep and one pig - were condemned.
