OFFICIAL REPLY TO COMPLAINTS •Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Rec. Sept. 22. 8.45 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 21. Mr Runciman, President of the Board of Trade, reply to the Poplar Council's resolution protesting against the high food prices, claims that the Government •has taken practical measures to deal with the problem. He instances their control of the frozen meat trade. They prevented prices soaring to great heights, but they could not be blind to the fact that illconceived and artificially fixed prices might easily create an actual shortage. Bfrba-cUy speaking, the Government coiild not control the. world's prices. No other country had .gone so far as Britain to interfere with food -supplies, except Germany. In the latter country prices had "isen to over-117 per cent, in Austria 149 per cent, and in Britain 65 per. cent.
