"I m afraid that encyclopaedia of. mine is hopelessly out of date;" "What makes you think so?'' "I paid the last instal. ment on it yesterday." \, An astral phenomenon was observed in Auckland! at a 'late hour on Wednesday nigh* ,and'a message fromi Waihi to the Auckland Star indicates that *"* was mad© evenij more manifest there. Messrs E. Grknwade and T. Hanna-were proceeding to their homes at Takapunia, after attending a meeting oB the local Borouigh Council, when they observed a bright flash like ■ sheet lighthang'i which momentarily lit up the whole countrys'de. This was followed! a. few minutes later by a heavy rumble in the distance,' as though caused by .thunder. The hajpipendngs were the more remarkable because, the night was clear and starlight, quite different from those. on which thunder and lightning are usually experienced.. A meteor passed over Waihi about 11.30 on; Wednesday night at a terrific rate. The whole of the sky was i'lliumiirated. The meteor exploded over the west end of the town with two loud reports m> quick succession sheddimg a light brilliant green in the vicinity. It was thought by many that a volcanic eruption had occurred. Many houses in Waihi were • shaken. Those who observed the phenomenon in Auckland state that the\ initial flash was of clear white light, but it seemed to have a "core." which wasdirectly overhead-, and difficult .to observe; _ In; their experience there wag a considerable gap between the flash and the final report.
The first meeting of the local committee which has been set up—-comprising representatives of the various Fruitgrowers' Associations in Otago, the Otago, Agricultural and Pastoral Society, the Dunedin 'Horticultural Society, and the Otago Expansion Leagne—to organise the TTational! Apple (Show, to "bo held next year in Dunedin, was held on Monday night in order 'to discuss with.the Otago delegates to the New Zealand Fruitgrowers' Federation various matters in connection with the show. It was (particularly desiredi that the duties of the committee should 'bo defined, and that its position with respect to finance should •be made clear. In the course of the meeting there was some''discussion on the point whether the annual conference of the [Fruitgrowers' • Association should not bo held at (ihe time of the national show, audi in the centre where the ; show is .held 1 . The Fruitsrowera' Federation has decided that it was' adivisable that the conference should be held- in Wellington, for the veason that business transacted at it anight bo conveniently 'brought -under'the notice of: the Government, land, if the General Assembly siiouM; be in session, under that also of members of Parliament, but it was argued that various questions arising out of the show, such as those relative to judging and the naming of varieties of fruit, should be considered by the conference on the spot at the time of the show. The opinion was strongly expressed at the meeting that it, was undesirable that the annual show should- be utilised for the purpose of advertising (particular districts, and also that it was advisable that judiges should' be appointed from outside New Zealand, it being mentioned that several fruitgrowers of standing in Australia would be vrUUng to agfc.
