EFFECT- OF ALLIED EFFORTS. (Published in The Times.'' LONDON., Sept. 19. The war correspondent of the Frankfurter Zeitmig says: 'The Somme offensive is most terrible. Jt is continuous fighting. The enemy* only pause to hastily prepare new attacks. They have a crushing artillery and in fantry superiority and are indulging in perfectly horrible orsries of modern scientific destruction. The German soldiers, fighting in hell., are making the most gigantic sacrifice for the Fatherland. How long can this slaughter last?" The correspondent points out that the enemy are immensely strong, while Germany is compelled to hold the whole of the West front and the greater portion of the East front, and is supporting her allies in the Carpathians,,- Transylvania, the Dobrudja, and Turkey.
