WRECK OF THE TONGARIRO
THE IOOORT'S DECISION, (United Pkess Association.) WELLUNiGTON, This (Day. The court of enquiry into the wreck of the 'Tongariro delivered its decision to-day. The Court found that-the disaster was primarily caused bv the default of the chief officer, P. J. Ballard, in failing to take precautions for verifying the position of the vessel when off Table Gape. The Court consiifaredl that Gaptain Makepeace was responsible for the 1 safe navigation of the vessel, and the duty lay upon him to ascertain her position after passing Table iGape, where the course was set. The default of the master and the. chief officer contributed to the. wreck. . , ; The master's certificate was* suspended for six monflis, and the chief officer's for three months. As the chief- officer holds a master's certificate, he was granted a. mate's certificate. ' The question of allocation of costs was deferred until later in the day.
