INDEPENDENCE TO BE FIRMLY DEFENDED. ARMY CONSTANTLY STRENGTHENED. (Renter's Telegrams.) (Rec. Sent. 20. 1.55 p.m.) THE HAGUE, Sept. 19.^ Queen; Wilhelmina in ooening the States-General declared that she was firmly resolved to 1 defend tie independence and rights of Holland. The army -was being consantly strengthened. Queen Wrihelmina expressed thankfulness that Holland was not involved in the war. Our relations with all powers are friendly. I ! will continue in the future to follow .the line of duty dictated by the law of nations for neutral States, firmly Tesolved to defend my independence and maintain any rights against ■whomsoever may seek to attack them. Besvdes the military forces our stores of arms anid munitions are 'being augmented. Holland's economic life is every day more affected hy the circumstances arising on of the war, and) the Government is "obliged to take measures for supplying the ipedple's food. Therefore exports -will be restricted. The Queen referred to the difficulties of transport affecting the Dutch, colonf.es. The Government was doing all in its power to ameliorate colonial conditions and also strengthen the fleet to ade quately provide for maritime defence.
