THE ENLISTED SHIRKER

TO BE DEALT WITH IN FUTURE. Recently in various parts of the Dominion it has happened that recruits called up for certain reinforcements Have failed' <to put in an appearance, or satisfactorily explained their absence. J.he explanation, says the Post, is the "enlisted shirker," who registers, passes the doctor, gets his armlet and his name published °in the paper, poses as having done his duty, and—never turns up afterwards. This particular class, however, is to be cured as from Monday next, after which all recruits on registering and passing as fit will be sworn in, given ss, and required to parade for whatever draft they put themselves down for three months ahead. In other words, future recruits will immediately 'become soldiers, and on failing to parade when notified will be liable to be arrested as deserters and dealt with according to the Army Act. Enlistments so obtained will be genuine enlistments which the country may expect to be duly honoured. Those men already registered, passed, as fit, and waiting to" be called up will also be required to take the oath,, failing which their names will be wiped off the books, and they will become liable to be conscripted with the .others who have not enlisted.
