WELLINGTON", Sc\pp. 19. Mr W. -McMaster, of .Messrs Burns, Phi'lp and Co., of Sydney, Australasian representatiyes of the Nippon Yusen Kaisha, as at (piresent in Wellington on a mission to ascertain the prospects of establishing a dcu-ect s.teanpr service between Japan and New Zealand. At present there is a i-eg-ular service ■under contract wifchj the Japanese Ooyernnnent, hy -which a monthly imail service is secured with Australia t>y means of three steamers, and; lately an intermediate saildtng cf cargo steam>ers has secured praotdcaMy a fortnightly service. This service, being under contract for trade with Australia, must ■take all the Australfan cargo offering, and consignments to New Zealand take second place, being used l simply for filling ripj. Transhipments are made from Sydney, and New Zealand importers have experienced difficulty in obtaining sufficient space for their requirements. It is proposed if sufficient (inducement offers, to haye a separate service for New Zealand, but whether it will be 'brought abput defends -upon the amount of support that can be calculated upon from New Zealand) importers. It may be necessary in the first instance to fill -up with Australian cangojes, but <on signments to New Zealand l would b> vc preference.
