Thfi recent departure from Wellington of the RlackbaMi Coal Company's old hulk Elinor Vernon for Auckland awakens in the minds of many- of our Older shipping men, says the Wellington Post, memories of the days when the wi.".d'jammer held' pride of place on the waters. The Elinor Vernon came to New Zealand for t/he first time in May, 1879.. from New York, via B'unedin. She brought general cargo. About a. dozen passengers came by .her also, including relatives of the then master, 'Captain A. A. Copp. After that date she came regularly every year. The Elinor Vernon, together •with the barques Alice, Mary Hias'brouck, and- Essex, was owned by Arnold 'Cheney audi Co.. and was a regular trader between New Yorki and Ntew Zealand! for many years. In 1849 tihe Elinor Veiinon was sold at Du.iodin as a hulk, and she has since been serving in tHis capacity in various poi'ts here. Captain Berry was her master for a great many voyages following Captain J. A._ Copp. Then Captain Chadpourne- tooS' command, and he continued to' come here for some years. 'With the other barques mentioned'.'she came here with general cargo, and' returned to New York with kauri gum. The advent of the Elinor Vernon brings to mind the fate of the Viking, of the same trade, and owned by the same firm. She was rounding Cape Horn when she col"idled with a Standard Oil Ship. The sailer sank almost immediately. The master, who was married to an Auckland 1 girl, attempted to save his wife from drowning,' and jumped i"to the sea. He was not seen !or heard of again.
