UNNECESSARY TRIMMERS.

A FLAW IN THE ACT. LYTTELTON, Friday. Captain Sollars, of the steamer Canopus, was convicted this morning of having sailed without two trimmers required by the Shipping and Seamens Act, 1903. For the defence it was explained that the Canopus does not noed trimming, and having extra firemen, actually carried more men in the engine-room than the Act requires. Tho Act makes no provision for such a case, and a technical breach was recorded. The Marine Superintendent -was recommended, to forward a suggestion that the Act should be amended to provide for such cases.
