the exliibitors covered themselves with glory. Tho "Examiner" wrolo tb.it it proved "(lip pxtraorrlinary luxuriaiifo of the soil" of their new home aniT the fineness of the climate." The most sunguina believer in the eapablene.=s of the soil would never have expet-ted a tithe of what was exhibitd." It £*ems tliat the exliibiiion \va.~ nearly vetoed by the committee as injudicious ; "bad polky that might show the nakedness of the land." But for the matter of that, there were those who objected strongly to celebrating the anniversary at all. "It gives us the Greatest of pleasure to be able to say that the result of which some considered a dangerous experiment in so mixed a population, without many mutual lies, has proved perfectly .satisfactory; there was not a single instance of mdecorium, nolhing to affect the most fastidious." The day ended with, tea and cakes free far ill at the cricket ground, and daniTng on the green till the light failed. Thsre have been many anniversaries celebrated since, and it is to be hoped there will be many more in the future, despite the suggestion to do away with this historical holiday; but it is doubtful if there ever was or ever will be a jollier and heartier one than that celebrated on the Ist of February, 1843.
