FATAL BUGGY ACCIDENT.
i. HORSE SHIES AT A MOTOR CAR. A COUNTRY RESIDENT KILLED. A fatal trap accideiit- occurred at-, he Moutere Yesterday afternoon about' . mile and a* Ilalf below tlie Moutere Hotel, by which a resident of Upper Moutere," Mre Eggers, lo3t her life. Tosethei- with her 6on and two daughters*- Mra Eggers. Was driving jlorig the road at the point mentioned when the- conveyance was passed by. a motor ca* driven by Mt A. G. Mag'.nnity, bf Nelson, on his Way to Motueka. The car was going slowly at the time. The hoise, evidently taking trig.it at- the car, swerved and :an the' trap*, over a three-foot bank, with ths result that it was turned over on oue wheel against a paling fence. The accident did not occur until Mr Maginnity 'had passed the trap, and when he was a few yards ahead his attention wa4 attracted by the serea-rtis of the occupants of tho vehicle. Mr Maginnity immediately returnee, and rendered "all possible assistance. After extricating Mrs Eggers from under the trap it was "found that she was ■.oriously injured, and Mr Maginnity •vent back to the Upper Moutere Telegraph Office to despatch an urgent telegram" to Dr Deck, of Motueka, who arrived at the scene of the acident within half an hour. Mrs Eggers was removed' to Mr Berisemaiin s, but she died at; 6.30, the cause of death being shock", " : It was found that one of the thighs hid been broken, and the same leg was practically severed at the knee' Much blood was lost, and Mrs EggeM had suffered from a weak heart; and thie, it is thought, accelerated death very considerably. The remaining occupants of the trap and the horse was uninjured, and the vehicle was- not damaged. Mrs' Eggers was well known throughout the district, and the news of ths accident has been received with sincere regret ih many parts. The deceased lady was known particularly for kindly assistance in times of trouble The deceased, who was a daughter of Mr D; Wilkens, of Upper Moutere, and a sister of Mr W. D. Wilkens, of Nelson," leaves a family of 12 young children. Much sympathy will be felt with the beteaved relatives. No blame can attach to Mr Maginnity, who is one of the most careful and considerate motorists in Nelson.
