To make room for cables and telegrams, correspondence, and current news generally, our leading article is held over. Further rain, lasting some hours, fell last night, and the weather was still threatening to-day. St. Mary's second annual picnic on Anniversary Day promises to be even a greater success than the last. A large committee have the arrangement* in hand, and, given a fine day, all may depend upon having a very good day's enjoyment. The Education Board has received intimation from the Inspector-General of Schools that the following pupils of the Nelson Technical School have qualified for senior free places at the examination held at that school in November, 1308:— S. J. W. Harris, Clifton _3a_gcm, A. O. Crui-n, Alice Booth, and Florence Fleming. The Nelson Rowing Club Fours race : was advanced another stage last even- ' ing, when the semi-final was rowed. The race was between crews stroked by Chas. Hamilton and Lucas, and aftera gocd race the latter crew finished first. The winning crew were K. Lucas (st.), 11. Saunders (3), F. Hurley (2), and H. Hamilton (bow). The final will bo rowed to-night, at 5.30, when the winners meet Kitching's crew. Miss Elsie M. Moore has received from the secretary of the Society of Certificated Teachers of Shorthand the fellowship diploma of tho Society. The Uspl|oma entitles holders to use the distinctive initials F.C.T.S. Tho Citizons' Band will give a sacred concert on Sunday evening at the Botanical Reserve, when a choice programme of sacred music will be rendered. Mr F. N. Jones, junr., will also have his magnophone. Mr R. L. Mestayer is expected to arrive in Nelson next Tuesday in connection with the city drainage scheme. The City Council will sit as a Drainage Committee this evening to decide on the matters on which Mr Mestayer is to bo consulted. Messrs Bisley Bros, and Co. advertise auction sales to-morrcw as follows. — Special horse and vehicle sale, City Yards, at 11 a.m. ; dwelling and one acre of land at Spring Grove, at noon ; and at 12.15 p.m. privileges for the forthcoming Nelson Trotting Club meeting. Mrs Mumbles thought tliese 'ere "glove fights" were soft things and quito harmless; she was astonished to read that a man's jaw can bo broken and his ribs pounded in with a pair of gloves, and that Burns might have "passed out" but for police intervention. Scores are also astonished to find that Lock, the Universal Provider, and Complete Furnisher, holds such a magnificent stock of up-to-date furniture, etc., and gives such marvellous value.
