A SCOW SKIPPER IN TROUBLE.
CHAEGE OF FRAUD. [United Press Association.] ! AUCKLAND, Wednesday. At the police court this morning Edwin McGurney, a scow master, was charged on seven informations with having received sums of money totalling about £120 on behalf of Messrs Macklow . Bros., and with having fraudulently • failed to account for them. It was stated by the prosecutor that the accused was employed about the end of October, [ 1907, as master of the scow Kia Ora. Tho vessel was to be worked on shares, : the accused taking two-thirds of the earnings of the scow, out of which he paid all wages and stows ; the other third went to the firm, out of which they ; had to pay for the upkeep of tho vessel"; five per cent of the gross earnings was i, deducted and given to the owners or apents according to which party found the freight. It was not the accused's . duty to collect freights, but if he did so i he should account to the firm. All went » well for some time until it was discovered, as the prosecution alleged, that th« accused had collected various freight."., and had not accounted for them. The accused, who pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence, and was committed for ' trial, bail being allowed in one surety of 1 £10. Mr A.
