THE FEILDING CONVENT AND SCHOOL.
[United Pbess Association.] FEILDINO, Tuesday. An important judgment was delivered by Mr D. Thornton ,_ S.M., at the Feildlug Court to-day, in tho case uf the Feilding Borough Council v. Archbishop Redwood and Father O'Mcara. The defendants claimed exemption from rates because Archbishop Kedwood'« property was held by the convent and school and Father O'Meara's was the playground. In Archbishop Redwood's case it was shown that the nuns used the convent to teach music and singing to other than pupils of the school. The Magistrate, therefore, rnled that the convent land was liable to pay rates. In Father O'Meara's case, where there were three sections not divided by a fence, to which children had access, but on which a cow was grazing, the defendant was ordered to pay rates on one section. The action was a friendly one brought forward to settle the legal question as to the payment of rates.
