CITY COUNCIL.

The Council met at 7 o'clock last night. Present : The Mayor, Gra Levien, Buuny, Trask, Graham, Hcorhpuse, Hounsell, and Little. A letter was read from Mr Bunny calling attention to the damage being doner to Mr C. The Surveyor was instructed to look into the.niatieh The Works Committee reported in favor of the Council contributing a fair proportion towards erecting a new bell tower, provided the Insurance Companies subscribed towards' it. They also recommended that it Should be placed at the corner of Hardy and Wel-lington-streets. Adopted. — With reference to an application from Dr Irvine relative to a drain, the Committee stated their opinion •that Ihey. could ..not fecbniqseiid it as they did n.ot l,hink it desirable tjiat there should be drainage into the Sel Pond. Agreed t6.— Relative to the Gloucester-street ditch the Committee reported that a sewer would soon have to be built, and in the meantime they freconimehded tbat the ditch be cleared, out end the levels attended to. Adopted.— The Committee further recommended that the Haven Road be patched after the next rain ; also that ihe nuisance existing under th« Harmonic Hall, of which complaint had been made, should be removed. Resolved, That tha Secretary of the Harmonic .Society be communicated with on the subject. The (Jig and Waterworks Committee recommended that an application frbrri Mr .Warrsn and Mr .Harris for an extension of the gas service be granted on certain conditions. Agreed to.. The t Conjmittee reported that they had inspected the reservoir and- gasworks and found everything in good order and the extensions at the latter progressing a*tißf actorilyi f \ A number of cab drivers*' licenses were renewsrt.A letter from the Chairman of the Wainiea County Council to the. Secretary of _ the. Hospital . Committee *#«•; read stating that as the subsidies will cease at the end of the .current year, the, .County Coundil^oujd be unable to provide support for the Hospital, and from the las January next the City Council must not look the County Council for that aid, which the subsidies and the subsidies alone had^ODabfed it ■to_gtee.-_- --; The Mayor said that the City Council was in i similar position,^ arid a resolution was. passed," on the motion of Cr Bonny, to the affect that the Hospital Committee" be notified by. the City Council {bat no further conttibutioWcan be made by that body after the 31st inst. Cr Grah»m called attention to the state of the road at the corner of Franklin and Ngatiowa- streets which was ordered to be gravelled ecme months ago.— The Surveyor stated that the work then ordered to be done had been. accomplished.
