INSTALLATION OF MAYOR.
A Bprcial meeting of the City Council was held last night for the purpose of installing Mr Edwaid Everett as M»yor- Present : Crs Levien (in the chair), Bonny, Grakam, Harley, Moorhouse, Hounsell, Johns, and Trask. The minutes of the. last meeting having been raad, Cr Levien called upon Mr Everett to take the clmr, which he did and made the customary declaration which was attested by the Councillors. His Worship then said, In being again elected, without opposition, to the honorable position of Mayor I attribute it entirely to the unanimous desire of the Councellqrß. I should like to state that it will be ray utmost endeavor to conduct the business with strict impartiality, acd I shall allow the utmost freedom to tb9 debates consistent with the maintenance of gcod order, and I am sure that you will feel equally interested with myself in keeping order, and will giva me your assistance. Our Municipal institutions aro of tbe very freest kind and give to us the entire management of our affairs, and we should do our best to maintain for them that reepect which they deserve. I have to thank you for your kindly expn salons to me prior to my nomination, and I shall do my best to deserve your good will ai.d I hope that at tbe expiration of my term of office the same good feslicg will continue to exist between us. (Hear, hoar.) Cr Harley said that it had come to bis ksowledge that some of ths cabmen were charging fares in excess of the icale allowed by the by-laws. ComplaiuK had been made to him about it, acd he himiolf had been a sufferer. The Mayor said that some visitors had complained to him of being charged a shilling from the wharf. Af ttr gome discussion it wag resolved that the laepector be instructed to see that the provisions of section 180 of the by-laws are carried cut. Cr Graham called attention to a dangerous corner in Halifax-streef, and the Surveyor was instructed to see to it. Cr Moorhouse wes appointed a membar of the Public Works Committee, Cr Bonny of the Hospital Committee, and Cr Graham of the Finance Committee.
