TERRIBLE FIRE IN VIENNA
FEARFUL LOSS OF LIFE. Vienna, December 9. A disastrous col figuration f.ccompani d with immense loss of life occurred last n gbt ia this city. During the performance at the Riog (,iY) Theatre a lighted lamp fell on tie stage which wa& st once ignited. The firs soread with great rapiuity a:.d in a Bfcort time tbe flames had blocked all means of exit from the building. Sixty persons leapt from windows into extended articles of clothing held by others in streets below and were saved. Tin majority of those in tha Theatre were, however, unable to escape, and were burnt to d ;ath. Over three hundred corpses have up to the present been ex-' tricaied from the tuies of the building, wbicu has beeu complbtely gutted. Rome, December 8. A grand and impressive ceremony was performed to-day at St. Peter's, the occasion, beiug the canonization of four eminent deceased _ members of the Church of Rome. The rites of canonization were performed by Pope Leo, and the proceedings were narked with" great splendour and brilliance] His Holiness, whose health"lias for a long time past been most unsatisfactory continues in a very feeble state, and he was only able with difficuty to take part in the day's proceedings.
