CITY COUNCIL.
The Council met at 7 o'clock. Presrnt : The Mayor, Crs Levien, Trask, Bunny, Gra ham, Linlp, ard Iloucsell. A cab drivers license wag granted to "William Garner. The Gas and Waterworks Commi'tee reported that they had recently visited the gasworks, and desired to record their appreciation of the manner in which the extensions were bMng carried our, which, they considered, rtfkc'ed great credit on the Surveyor. The Works Committee reported that they had visited Trafalgar street south and considered that the works recently carried out by prison labor had been completed in a very satisfactory manner. The City Surveyor reported that Ihe ColKngwood bridge contract was progressing satisfactorily. At present there was a footway over it, but passenger traffic would have to bo stopped for & tima from the end of next week. In accordance with the recommendation of the Surveyor it was resolved to advertise for tenders for excavating and building ihe new anfc well at the gasworks, and also for delivering the neceß ; ,iry sand. Resolved, That the Surveyor be instructed to advertise a few days before it becomes necessary to barricade the Collicgwood bridge. It was resolved that the Surveyor bn instructed to employ extra labor if required for erect iog the bridge over the tideway in Halifax-street. The following tenders were received for digging gaspipe trerch°s in the Wood :— W. McX uzeand Co. 53 6d perchain (accepter?); W. Wanstow 7s ; A. Carter and Co. 7s 3d ; S S'reet and Co. 7s 6<i -, Gribble and Co. 83 9fl ; J. McLean 93 5d ; Morley end Co 11s 9d. Cr Bunny said that some time since an arrangement was made with the local representative of the Government to erect a 1-mp at the Rardy-streft entrance to the Government grounds, and he wished to know when it was likely to be done. — It was stated in reply that the lamps were nearly ready and would be erected in a ff-w (toys. Resolved, That the Works Committee visit Gloucester-3treet and report on the ditch there. The Town Cierk reported that the only new applicants to have tbfir name pinned on the bnrgesssr-B' roll were, Phillip Top'i«s for che Wood ward ; J. R. Barltrop, Waimea Ward ; and R. Ai ken, Brook ward. Cr Little asked that pips might be laid in the water table at the junction of Trafalgar and New streets. Referred to the Works Committee. Reßolved on the motion of Cr Houns°ll. that a new box drain be put in to carry off the stagnant water at the back of the Mail office. Prior to the Council adjourning bi3 Worship the Mayor aaiii that :his was the last occasion ou which he ahou'd preside at a Council meeting, nnd before retiring he wished to thank the Council fur the invariable courtesy they had displayed towards him. and the assistance th? y had rendered him in condacting th:-s bu-ine=s. He had always endeavored to do his duty to the best of his ability, and in an impartial minnf r, and ho hoped he had succf eded to the satisfaction of the ciiiz^ns. H? felt »ha' he w^a largely in d^bferl to Mr Gully, the Town Cierk, for the efficient ossirtancs he had always kippd him, and his successor should not fear the work attached to the office with Mr Gully to assist bim. To the staff generally he wished to express his appreciation of their services, and of the courtesy and civility they displayed to all baviDg business with the Council. He waa glad that he was to be succeeded by a gentleman who had such experience and to k such iutereßt in Mucicipal matters as Cr Everett. Cr Bunny, as the junior member, said that be was sure be was only expressing the feeling of thi- Council iv string that th-7 deeply reuretted the retirement of Mr D :dsoa from the civic chair. As a reprr.s^at-iiive of the citizens he ccuM also speak of thp individual and general esteem in which his Worship was held. On every possible occasion he had not only great displayed interest in the town and municipal matters, but had also been always tbe first to show kindness and boßpltiiHty to fisUoiß&li'iQm tbe position he
(Cr Bonny) held he was specially able to gpeak of this in reference to the Rifle Asscciation, and he could assure tbe Mayor that bis actions in this rrppect had been fully appreciated by the Volunteers. He bored tbat, although be was going to leave the Meyoral chair, the Council might always bfcve the benefit of his loi:g experience. Cr Trash could cot allow the Mayor to leave them without without expressing hia own regret, and his apprccia'ion of " the eitorts he had always made to conduct tbe business of the Council und the affairs ef the town In a manner satisfactory alike to Councillors ard citizens. I', had been a ple^cure {0 him to sit at tbe Council table and to feel tbat they were so firmly and yet pleasantly controlled He would like to see Mr Dodson in the chair again some day, or if that was not to be, he hoped tbat he might join them as a Councillor and give tbem the benefit of tbe experience gained during the 24 years he had served on the Board of Works and in the Council. Cr Graham said tbat Cr Bunny as the junior Councillor bad referred principally to the rfspeet in which his Worship wa3 held outside tbe Council. He himself must speak of the manner in which Mr Dodson bad conducted the business of the Council, and of the patience and forbearance ho bad invariably displayed, sometimes on most trying cccasions, when a man of less forbearance would probably not bave been able to control his feelings. Iv addition to hi 3 urbanity he bad also displayed thorough straightforwardness and considerable ability in managing tbe municipal affairs. He quite endorsed the Mayor's remarks upon the Town Clerk and staff generally, and felt that they could not easily be better served. His Worship expressrd hia grateful acknowledgment of the kind remarks that had been made, and ths Council then adjourned.
