It seems that lately it has been deemed desirable to obtain a return of all the live property belonging to the natives of Eiji, and circulars were sent out requesting that lists of all their goats, fowls, geese, &c, &c , should be made up and sent to the head office. These circulars have been multiplied by a manifold writer, and some of the letters were not quite clear. Erom this it arose (soys the Suva Timrs) that in the Navua district the native officer read Kose, the word f or cats iv that dialect, instead of Kuse, the Fiji method of pronouncing goose. Inconsequence every available scribe in the district is engaged in looking up all the cats in the various towns, and the town officers are at their wits' end to know how they are to get an accurate census of the feline tribe that have taken to the bush. Captain Malcolm, late of the Penguin (says the /V. Z. June") has, we understand, resigned his command, aad also retired from the service of the Union S. S. Company. We believe he has definitely decided to " coil up his ropes and anchor on shore." His many friends will wuh him well in his retirement from active service, none more so than ourselves. He has had a full share of the vicissitudes of a seaman s life, but, on the whole, has been very fortunate. He was amongst the pioneers of tha West Coast of the Middle Island, the scene of his greater successes, and his Dame will be associated with it, " for all time." Captain Malcolm still retains his connection with the Union Company as one of its largest shareholders.
