WAIMEA COUNTY COUNCIL.

Tiie Council met on Wednesday, November 23rd. Present, all the members. " The persons undermentioned took their seats as representatives of their respective ■districts, on the notification of their election severally by the Returning Officers :—Ridiu***of Motueka, xlobert Pattie ; Moutere, C__is°tiap Dencker ; Stoke, John Wallis Barnicoat; Wangamoa, William Wells ; Wai-iti, Joshua Bird; Motupiko, David Lindsay; Wangapeka, William Henry Phillips. The Council having met in pursuance of the o.th section of the Counties Act, which requires that the election of Chairman take place on the 4th Wednesday in November in every year, on the motion of Mr Wells seconded by Mr Dencker, Mr Barnicoat was appointed Chairman of tho Council. Tue Council then met for the transaction of general business under the 67th section of the Counties Act. The expenses attending the election jnst gone through, as far as made known by the several Returning Officers (?'. .., from Messrs Wilson, Baigent, Kelling, Quinton, and Rout) were then examined. On the motion of Mr Bird, seconded hy Mr Wells, it was resolved, That the following fees ancl expenses be sanctioned by the Council : — Returning Officer's nomination, £1 Is ; Ditto Polling. £2 2s ; Deputy Returning Officer 's Polling, £1 Is; Poll Clerks, 10s 6d ; and other reasonable expenses. The Treasurer was instructed to issue cheques to the several Returning Officers in conformity with this scale, and reasonable expenses as allowed. A lei ter from Mr Trower, late Overseer of Works to the Upper Motueka Highway Board, was read, offering to superintend any work at the disposal of the Council at the southern end of tho county. The Chairman was requested to. reply that the Council would be glad to nmil itself of Mr Trower . services when required. The l e! ter from Meters L. and H. Everett complaining of the condition of the ditch between the land of Messrs E. Fry and Boyes at Riwaka (wbich ditch is alleged to be uud*r the~ control of the c^untv) owing to the deposit of sand.— On the motion of Mr Bird, seconded by Mr Pattip, it wu» resolved, That the ne.e-._ry steps bo taken to place tho said drtin under the control sf the Riwaka Highway Board. On the motion of Mr Phillips, seconded by Mr Pattie. it was resolved, That the sum of £5 be placed at the cliipoaal of the Riwaka Highway Board for expenditure on the said drain . A letter from the Secretary to the Hospital Committee was read, enclosing, for the information of the Council, a copy of the Hospital Report and balance-sheet, for the yearj-.ended 31st. March, 1881 ; also a copy of a .efter "from the Under-Secretary for the Colony having refersnee to the maintenance of the .Hospital from tho lst October last. The letter of Mr Cooper informed the Hospital Committee " that up to the end of September last, the whole amount granted for the half-year must be deducted from subsidies. -For the future the old system will be resorted to, and the half only of Hospital expenditure will be paid from the Consolidated Fund, the remainder being paid by the City, and no deductions being made from subsidies." The Chairman stated that in consequence of the terms ofthe letter received by the Hospital Committee he had handed over to that Committee the sum of £100 placed at his disposal for Hospital purposes at the last meeting of the Council On the motion of Mr Wells, seconded by Mr Dencker, it was resolved, That the Chairman ascertain from th 6 Government what sum will he available for the use of the County from the subsidies granted under the llth Section of the Appropriation Act, 1381. Payment ordered: £1 5s to Mr David Kerr for the cost incurred in removal of certain trees and ether obstructions on the road in the Top House Outlying District in May last at the request of the Chairman. > On the motion of Mr Lindsay, seconded by Mr .Wells, it was resolved, That the District Engineer be asked whether he is in a position to afford the Council any information on the following points :— lst. The distance of tha proposed new line of road from Windy Point, by Korris's Gully, to the banks of the Motueka river at BromeH's. 2nd. The distance from the banks of the Motueka river at BromeH's, by "the new road on top of the range, to Windy Point. Notices op- Motion fok Decbotjer Meeting. By Mr Phillips, That this Council meet for the future every three months. # _ By Mr Dencker, That the Council consider its: financial position, and take such steps as circumstances may demand. Council adjourned to Wednesday, the 21st December at 11 o'clock.
