Wellington, Tuesday. ' An ektraordinaiy charge of forgery was heard at Otaki on Saturday before Messrs Sincox and Hadfield, J P's. A Maori, who said he had recently sold some land in the Waikato for which he had a cheque fer £t",700, told Mr Dodds, a settler, that he had lost it between Manawatu Kiver at the Waiwera stream, and asked Dodd to write him two cheques for £1000 each, one for £400, and another for £100. Two of the cheques were issued in the name of Joseph Rhodes, and two in the name of Charles Compton. The Native said he would give Dodds a cheque for £200 for his trouble, which he consented to. The Maori tried to cash the smaller cheques; but was unsuccessful. Dodds was committed for trial at Waaganui, bail being allowed. Francis Williams deposed to Hiroki having said he would kill tlis pakeha. George Blake a half-caste, gave evidence as to searching for Hiroki when he was escaping to Parihaka. Taps, Te Waero, a Waitotara chief, said he accused Hiroki of murder, which prisoner did not deny. The case waa adjourned till to-morrow. Wednesday. Mr Kelly addressed the electors last evening. There was a larga meeting, Mr Samuel in the chair, Mr Kelly reviewed the patt session, declared for free and purely secular education, said it was creditable to the Government to ask Mr Bryce to again take the portfolio of Native Minister, spoke most eulogistically of the Volunteers, and Baid the House Rhould sot grudge granting the capitation when their value had been thoroughly evidenced during the late native crisis. He said he was in favor of granting bonuses for local industries and concluded by showing that in the past he had assisted in getting public works carried on in the district and the country opened up. A vote of confidence was carried, only o*e hand being held up against it. The case of Hiroki came on at tho Police Court thia morning. Kereopa was the first witness examined, and hs deposed to going iv search of Hiroki, and to finding; a kit. On seeing him afterwards at Paribaka he mentioned the murder of McL9sn to the prisoner who did not reply. — William Williams, late Land Purchase Commissioner, deposed to being instructed by the Government to go in search of Hiroki after the murder of M'Leaa, and when engaged in bo doing to the finding of a kit, shawl, and mat. In reply to a question put by the prisoner, witness said he did not know whether the things found belonged to Hiroki. — Tamanui deposfd to seeing Hiroki after the murder of McLean as he came to the witness' whare.
