Opunake, Friday. A narrow escape from & fatal accident occurred at the Opunake Hotel last night. A person under the influence of drink entered a room wfaere three or four gentlemen were asleep, and seeing a rifle lying in a corner he took it up, and while he was examining it, it exploded. Mr Armit, formerly of Wellington, but now of the ' Hawera Star, 3 was asleep close to where the discharge took place, and a quantity of the grains of the powder entered his face, but fortunately the bullet itruck the iron at the head of the bed, which turned its course, otherwise Mr Skeet and Mr Hadfield (Native Interpreter) would have been seriously injured, if not killed. New Plymouth, Saturday. A detacben-nt of Mounted Rifba under Captain Davidson, accompanied by Major Tnke, visi.ed the various settleaientg between WV.itara and Urenui yesterday to search for arms. They returned to town last night about 1030, haviisg during the da? searched seventy tHiire TillagPß and secured sixty arms, consistiag cb:<fly of fowliug pieces, rifl.s, and a few "Brown Be33ea " The party did a hard day'a work, riding nearly 80 miles. Patea, Saturday. The Wangaaui ar,d Marcou Infantry arrived last night, and proceeded to Waverley this morning. The Wsitotara natives who are witnesses in Hiroki's case have held a meeting, and refused to proceed to New Plymouth to give evidence. Inspector James has gone to watch the prosecution AncKr.AND, Safuiday. Two burglaries are reported to d*y. Cary's Company psrforraed Maritaaa last night ond achieved a great success. The Company leave for Nelson on Tuesday after a most succeajf ul season.
