The Sydney Bulletin publishes a sensational article on the alleged malpractices of undertakers in that city. It states that not longago a man brought into the office a v/oodon box, like a gin case, whicli he placed upon the floor, preparatory to explaining his business. The box was an empty cherry-case, in which, the merest chance had led him to discover, tho body of his infant had been doubled up and" crushed down for burial. It alleges that undertakers frequently levy blackmail on the poor hy refusing to deliver the coffin at the last moment, unless they are paid an exorbitant amount in cash, the relatives generally acceding rather than have a 1 scene " at such a painful moment. The same journal, on the authority of an ex-assistant, also accuses undertakers of Sydney of robbing corpses of shrouds, face-cloths, &c, when they are left alone in tlie rooms to fasten up the coffin. It adds : — "And there worse indignities than even this. A quick wrench of the mouth, a, dexterous scoop of the blackcoated thief's finger, and the artificial teeth with their gold mounting is in the violator's palm, quickly to be slipped into his pocket, and afterwards to be beaten out of shape and sold to the jewellers or pawnbrokers as battered old gold. Many a maiden wears upon her linger an engaged ring, many a wife wears a wedding hoop, of which the gold has been filched from the mouth of the dead." The Bulletin is a journal known for its devotion to the sensational and it is to be hoped, for the credit of Sydney, that thesa alleged "disclosures" are not true.
A quantity of human skeletons have been found in a tree near Opotiki The correspondent of the Tauranga Times says : — "An incident of considerable interest to local archaeologists has transpired bore. Home distance up the Ofara Gorge on a portion of tho estate of Thomas Black, Esq., an e.'ior nious puketoa, probably many hundred years old, has been blown down, disclosing the astounding fact that tlie whole of the hollow interior, extending from the roots to the first fork, about forty-five feet, had been filled with human bodies. Since its fall these have burst out at the butt of the tree in the form of a confused heap of skeletons. A more extraordinary sight than this monarch of the forest lying prone and discharging a perfect hecatomb of human skeletons can scarcely he conceived. Some are nearly perfect wh;!e others are mixed up in a chaotic mass of heads, hands, feet, arms, and legs indiscriminately AU the Maoris here seem to haye teen quite unaware of this natural charnel house, and declare that it must have happened bug before their or their fathers' time. Indeed, the appearance of the tree fully justifies the supposition that it mu?t have beon some hundreds of years since this novel family vault was filled witli its ghastly occupants." _ .1- i.o uLiNt; I—For tbe Te.'b. and Eientli — "- few drops oi the liquid " Ftori'ine " sprinkler] cn a wet teoth-trusb produca a pleasant lather, which thoroughly cleanses the teeth frcm Rllparavi.es and impuitrieeharcleaa the sums, prevents tartar, etops dr-c::y.
