THE ELECTRIC LIGHT IN MELBOURNE.
Three months ago the Eastern Market was illuminated for the first time by the electric light. Four burners were placed at different parts of the building at a test of the strength} the gas was turned down very low, in fact, almost out, and the electric lights were found to work admirably, and it was then plainly to be seen that a fewmore burners would have the effect of giving a great light. Since then the Compauy have put up five more burners, namely, three under each division of the ma,in roof, making in all nine. The only unpleasant effect it has is that of dazzling, but that is now provided against by the use of grouudglass shades, made iv a square form. Opal globe shades were tried, hut it was found that they absorbed some 50 per cent of the light, and, therefore, they had to be dispensed : with. - The light presents no. longer a stellary appearance, but is more like that of a moon when full. From the general expression of opinion, and the number of people that nightly crowd the market, it appears very popular. One more light is to t c placed near tho clock, or facing the main entrance from Bourke-street, which will complete the contract. It will be interesting to know that the cost of the lighting is £939 anuually. The contract with the gas company amounted to £1450 antnial'y, so it will be evident to all that a great saving has been effected. The; expense for tho first year will only amount to £939, allowing for machinery expenditure. After the first twelve months tho cost will be only £700 annually. The reduction is very great, and the light in every respect superior to gas. The Electric Company are now preparing for tho erection of a central electric station, which is to be built next to the Academy, of Music, in Bourke-street East. When this is completed they will commence to light a number of business places in Bourkestreet, together with the Victorian, Arcade. They also purpose putting up stations in various parts of the city as the demand for lighting increases, — Melbourne Herald.
