LATEST FROM THE FRONT
(From our Special Correspondents.) Rahotc, Wednesday 220 p.m. [Received at 10 40 p.m.] The linß was blocked till four o'clock yesterday, so my message was delayed. Four hundred Volunteers arrived at Opunake yesterday, and 200 march here to-day, and by Friday we shall hare a force of about 900 meu at this place alone. Each man has been served out with 80 rounds of ammunition. There is skirmishing drill for 4 hours daily. We expect Mr Bryce and Colonel Roberts here this after aoon. An excellent spirit pervades all ranks. Rahotu, Wednesday 2.30 p.m. (Received at 10-15 p m.) Major Pitt commands the whole of the Volunteers, Dr Boor Principal Medical Officer, and Captain Webb Adjutant. The force will probably move from here on Friday. Opunake, Thursday, 9 a.m. The Thamee and Canterbury Volunteers marched for Rahotu yesterday The Wanganui contingent marched at ten to-day for the Bame camp, and those to arrive by the Hinemoa to-day will march out after landing. To-morrow will see 1140 men under arms at Rahotu. Major Pitt will command the Volunteers. Major Noake arrived yesterday and resumed command at Opunake. Captains Gudgeon and Taylor rejoined head quarters at Pungarehu to-day, Captain Som?rvillc of the Wanganui Cavalry taking charge at Manaia. The camp at Rahotu presented a lively sight yesterday. Nelson fired a; match and won, and at the same time the same corps played a cricket match which was unfinished when I left. Major Pitt is prepared to back Nelson at any friendly contest. In the afternoon tbe Nelson men were out in skirmishing order under Captain Webb. When the Thames and Canterbury Volunteers marched into Camp, tbey were heartily cheered by the A.C's and the latter quickly pitched their tents under the supervision of Captain Newall. The two Naval Biigades had a special friendly greeting. A patrol of the Taranaki Mounted Rifles passed through Rahotu during the day. The conduct of all the Volunteers, both in Camp and on the march, has been excellent. The Hon Mr Rolleston baa just landed.
