The Government are only consistently following out fhe policy initiated by the Commissioners in takine t^e important step of isßoine »he proclamation. It is joraewhat ginguhr that His Excellency, Sir A. Gordon, should bave arrived unexpectedly jost on the day when tbis important document was signed by the Actirg-Gove'nor (Sir James Prendergaa!) appeared ; but we bope Bis Excellency will not feel it needful in any way to interfere to weaken the bsDds of his Executive in the decisive steps which they are taking. We presume that in tbis as in other mat'ere he is bound to follow tbe advice of hia Ministers, unites he i« prepared to tfcke the responiibility of dismissing tbem. Bot there is cause for some apprehension lest the supposed philo • aboriginal tf ndernets of Sir Arlbnr should lead him to interfere more than is desirable io tbe present dispute. We are sure tbat Ministers bave tbe foil sopport of the wbole colony in •what tbey nre doinw, and we bope they will be also te fully supported by ibe Qoeen's representative. Whatever tbe conseqoence immediately attendant on the execution of that policy may be, it is the right policy whicb, looking to nltlmate result?, is roost conducive to the public welfare. What is more, we are convinced tbat the Ministers will be sopported in it by the public opinion from one end of New Z aland to the otbfr, that the p rp'e, without regtrd to tbeir poii.ical d gtinecion, will sympathise wiih thtm in the anxiety which ita executicn irvolvep, tnd willingly share witb them the responsibility for it ; an:* thit if tley firm y cerry it into complete and final stccess __( all costs, thfy win receive tbe hearty congratulations and enjoy the confidence of ihousanda who have hitherto despaired of., a.y bold apd hornet j
policy being undertaken in relation to Native affairs.
