London, Oct. 22. ■me Gazette issued yesterday announces that her Majesty the Queen has conferred Companionships of the Order of St. Michael and St. George upon J. Cashel, Hon. Secretary to the Agent-General for Victoria in London, and upon Mr J. B. Were and Mr J Cousins Newberry of Melbourne. The Dutch steamship Koning Der Eederlander, of 2083 tons, encountered a heavy gale on the voyage from Batavia to Amsterdam, and broke bermain shaft. Efforts were made to put her under sail, but she proved unmanageable, and foundered shortly afterwards. Thirty-eight of the passengers and the crew saved themselves by means oftfe boats and have reached land safely, but ore hundred and seventy-five, who also left the ship in boats, are still missing. The homeward Australian and New Zealand mails, which left Auckland on Sept. 13 iii San Francisco, were delivered here today. News is to hand to-day from Ireland that in constqueuce of the Viceroy's recent proclam -ition declaring the Land League to be an illegal association, the offices of the organisation in Dublin are closed. A manifeato has been issued by the League leaders adjuring its adherents to maintain a firm attitude, and at the same time to continue a passive resistance to the measures of the Government. The manifesto farther announces that all public meetings under the League's auspicea will be temporarily abandoned. * Reports to hand from Ireland show that the strong measures which have been adopted by the Execute are having a salutary effect The condition of the country is much eglmf-r and order prevails in the " disturbid " districts. The priests generally in Ireland endorse the terms of the letter recently written by the Archbishop of Cashel condemning the League's manifesto exhorting tenants to refuse to pay their rents. Rome, Oct. 22. It ia announced that the visit which King Humbert was abont to make to Berlin has been postponed owing to the ill health of the Emperor William. Bermn, Oct. 22. The Emperor William is at prea«nt indisposed, but hia illness is not of a nature to cause alarm.
