Washington, October 14. At the meeting of the Senate to-day Mr Davis, a neutral member, wa3 elected President in place of Mr Bayard, democut, who was recently elected temporarily to that position. Lokdoit, October 14. Numerous meetings are being held in Ireland at which proposals have been made by various speakers that the tenants generally should refuse to pay any rent until Parnell has been released. A special Gazette has been issaed by the Irish Executive to-day, in which " boycotting " and coercion to join the League are proclaimed criminal acts. Several further arrests of prominent agitators have been made. Among those now in custody are Mr Arthur O'Connor, member of the House of Commons for Queen's County. Mr J. O'Kelly, member for Roscommon, Mr T. Sexton, M.P. for Sligo, and Mr Quinn, Sscretary of the Land League. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Mr Healey. M.P. for Wexford, and otber arrests are known I to be imminent. A very severe hurricane has been experienced on the English coast causing numerous wrecks and immense damage to aeaport towns. Several lives bave been lost through the disasters which have occurred. Consols have advanced to 99. New Zealand five per centa have suffered a decline of J and are tr day quoted at I 0 for 10-40 loan, and 100| for 1889 loan. Four and and a half per cent 1879-1104 remain at 98|. The market for colonial breadstuffs is unchanged. The stringent measures whicb bave been adopted by the Government in Ireland continue without abatement. Mr DilloD, M. P. for Tipperary, who was released from custody in August, aud Hefferman, another prominent agitator who was also recently released, have both been rearrested. O'Brien, the editor of the " United Irishmen," the organ of the League, has been arrested. Telegrams received to-day from America state that tbe Irish agitators in tbat country are maddened ai, the action of tha Irish Executive. Ths storm whicb raged yesterday on the English coast destiayed proparty to the value of £50,000, and caused the death of fully 200 Northumberland fishermen.
