Wellixgton, Thursday. The Volunteers who go to the front are to bo paid at the same rates as the Armed Constabulary. The land sale at Hawera was a great success, two-thirds of the land offered was sold ; the sections on deferred payments, averaged £2 10s ; those for cash, £2. The suburban sections averaged £16, one being sold for £20. Ddnedin, Thursday. The Otago Daily Times has authority to state that Mr Oliver joins the Ministry without a portfolio, and will be called to the Upper House, and therefore will not stand for Dnnedin Central, for which seat probably Mr C. B. Cargill will become a candidate. Friday. Captain Scott was favorably received at Roslyn. He announced himself a thorough free trader, and a supporter of the Bible in schools, and said he would give the Government an independent support. Mr Murray addressed his constituents at Milton last night. A motion was moved that the meeting endorsed Mr Murray's action during the past session, and to this was afterwards added, " That Mr Murray be invited to offer himself for re-election." An amendment was moved thanking him for his past services and his address, but, considering there were two local candidates in the field, suggesting that he should retire. Twenty voted for the amendment. The molion was carried by a large majority. Auckland, Thursday. Daring a boys' quarrel at the North Shore, William J. Endins, aged nine years, stabbed another lad named Alexander Gratten, in the back with a penknife. Endins has been brought up, and is remanded till Monday. Garrard, the great labor agitator, has been arrested for sending in a false claim for insertion on an electoral roll. Since bis candidature for Auckland North, he has been busy placing name of persons on the rolls who were entitled to vote but were not registered. It is understood tnat similar legal proceedings are pending against other persons who are alleged to be guilty of such malpractice. Friday. At the Magistrate's Court this morning, Charles Ryland, on remand was committed for trial on two separate charges of obtaining goods by means of valueless cheques. A third charge of a similar nature broke down in consequence of its being shown that the cheque had not been presented for paymeat at the bank. At a meeting of the building trade held last night, when 30 were present, it was decided to work 8J hours per day, and have half a holiday on Saturday. At a meeting of the Grammar School Governors to-day it was decided to erect a Boarding Establishment capable of accommodating 40 pupils. Garrard, the agitator, was brought before the Magistrate this morning charged with personating, and remanded. CnßisTCHuncß, Friday. Mr Wason addressed the electors of the Wakanui district at Rakaia last night aud received a vote of confidence. At the Christ's College sports yesterday the Challenge Cup for the greatest number of points was won by W. P. Siudholme. It is repotted here that Colonel Lyon and
Colonel Packe suggested that the Lyttelton Naval Brigade should volunteer for service at Parihaka, but the latter did not not think the inducements offered good enough and refased. Oamaru, Friday. Cleared—barque Helen Denny with wheat for Falmo ith.
