A public meeting in the matter of political reform, and with a view to forming a Reform Association, will be beld at the Brightwater schoolroom on Saturday evening next at half past seven. Wb understand that in consequence of a letter which appeared in our columns yesterday making certain charges ajainst the members of the Naval Brigade of conducting themselves in an unseemly manner at Motueka last Sunday, Major Pitt is taking steps in Jhe direction of instituting an inquiry into the proceedings of the corps on that day. Tub Captain's Inspection of the Ar.illery Volunteers will take place to-nigbt, wben every member of the Battery is expected to be present. Thb Diocesan Synod last night considered the propriety of thanking the representatives in the Legislature who prevented the passing of tbe Bill for Incorporation of Tiusts, and afrer somo discussion the resolution waa carried. A long debate on the Pension Fund elicited the fact that it was in a most satisfactory condition, and one of the soundest of the financial arrangements. Mr G. Jennings *waß reappointed Diocesan Secretary. A vote of sympathy with tbe Wesleyan body respecting the Tararua disaster was carried unau • mously. Tise report of the Committee on financial arrangements in Collingwood was debated, but carried. Provision was mude for holding a Synod in January next beforo the departure of the Bishop for Europe. Resolutions of sympathy were passed with the Greymouth church people on the oosts entailed on them by the destruction of their church by the recent hurricane, admiring their promptness and liberality in coming forward to meet them, and commending their case to the Bupport of churchmen generally. The following Standing Committee was announced as elected : — Clergy: Yen Archdeacon Mules, Revs Lt-ighton, Jones, Whyte, and Williams. Laity: Messrs A. Pitt, fiunicoat, C. H. Brown, Dr Boor, and John Holloway, Mr C. Y. Pell being Diocesan Registrar, and Mr J. W. Barnicoat DioceeanTreasurer. Some of the more interesting resolutions will appear in subsequent issues. On the previous evening Madame Summerhayes kindly forwarded to the President and members of the Synod tickets for the concert. The President, in notifying it, expre.sed regret that the short time of the Synod prevented his availing himself of such a considerate act of kindness, wbich under less pressing circumstances he and the Synod would have much enjoyed. The Lyell correspondent of the Reefton Times writes that the revival of mining there has now become almost general throughout the fi.ld, and the number of hands employed in the different mines is now nearly as high as it was in the best days of the field, and the inhabitants are full of hope for tho future of the placo. During the next financial year tbo Dunedin Ciiy Council purposes expending the sum of £1000 on baths!, and ehould it bs deemed expedient will subsequently vote a similar sum for baths at the south end of the towu. The rents from the Bith reserves will pay the interest on both amounts. Would that our experience of Corporation baths in Nelson were timihr to that of our Danidin friends.
