A Sydney telegram to a Melbourne paper states that Mr John Tebbntt, of the private observatory at Windsor, discovered another comat on Saturday evening, 17th September, in the conitellation Libra. Mr H. C. Russell, the Governmeat astronomer, on the evening of the 19th September, turned the large telescopa at the Sydnay Observatory upon the celestial visitor, and found it t« be a faint comet, with a central condensation, but no nucleus. It has a tail about ten minutac of an aro long. When first seen it was passing over a atar of the tenth magnitude. It ia not jret poasibls (adds the telegram) to lay whether it will get brighter or boI, but it may ba found with a telescope of tnodarat* power 15 minutes of timo preceding Alpha Libra, and one degrae further aouth. It ia moving rapidly south, at a motion of naarly a degrea a day. Tha Inanjahua Herald »ayß— " Mr Jamas Stevensoa who engaged to return from Cantarbary to Reefion by tha Ada Pass, mat with an insurmountabl* obstacle when only 48 miles from Reefton. At that point for a distance of about two chains, the snow lay to a depth •! 18ft. owing to the track through a pass aaving beea cufc on the shady side of tha forge. The oppoaite side exposed to the sun was perf actly free from snow. Mr Stevenson had to return by Top House, making a detour in consequence of thia unexpected obstacle of naarly ISO miles."
