CITY COUNCIL.
The Council m«t last night. The newly •loctsd mamberß, Crs Bunny, Traak, and Little, took th«ir seats, and in addition there were present, the Mayor, Cm Bverett, Levlen, and Hoansell. A lattsr tm read f rom the Under Secretary expressing the regret of the Ministry that they were unable to plaea on the Estimatei & mm of money for carrying the road round the Rocks. Permission was granted to Mr Good to lay down a drain from Mr Black's house, at Auckland Point, connecting with the drain across Haven Hoad. ; A letter was read from the acting Harbormatter granting permission to remove stone ; from the Boulder Bank at Ware Point under the supervision of Mr. Pilot Low*. ; The Gas and Waterworks Committee reported that the Surveyor had arranged for the sale of the small gasholder for £100 after the end of the present month, when it could ba spared without detriment to consumer*. The Gag and Waterworks Committee reported agianst an application from Mr Wilson for the water to lie laid on to hii house in the Maitai Valley. . The SurTeyor, on being questioned, stated that the cost would be £28 and the revenue £2 per annum. Cr Everett was in f aror of laying on the water wherever it could be dont if the rate was sufficient to cor«r the interett. The Mayor ■aid that if they hid on the water to Mr Wilson a door there was no certainty that he would take it as be had already broken faith with the Council with rtgsrd to tht gas whiah was laid on upon the strength of his promise to mse it, instead of which he refused to do so for some time and then would only take it for cooking purposes. On the motion of Cr Banny the matter was referred back to the Commitftte. . The Committee recommended that the surplus tar at the gasworks sbonld ba utilised in making asphalte blocks. On the motion of Cr Everett it wai resolved to reeonsider th« matter at th« next meeting «f the CounaiL The Works aommittee recojimended that Waimea-street be properly graded from Mr Grant's to a little btlow Nile-street, and that the stuff to be removed bo placed on the footpath in Hardy-streefc near Mrs Betta'. After some discussion it was decided to call for tenders and to give the Works Committee power to accept the lowest at their meeting on Thursday next. It was decided on the recommendation of the Works Committee to erect a proper onnal with the water laid on to it near the Cuitorn Honse, and to fill up the hollow at the corner of Hardy and We'lingtonatreets. The following tender was received for a supply of 100 yards of stone from the Boulder Bank to be delivered at the gasworks wharf: J. McLean 12s 6d per cubic yard. This being considerably above the Surveyor's estimate it was declined. The following tenders were received for the Col ling wood bridge:— J. Newport, for Brook street Valley stone, l»s «d per cubic yard; J McLean and Co, Adele Island stone, 23i per cubic yard. The Surveyor, on being applied to, stated that the Adele Island stone for the breastwork at the port was delivered
lor 10s per yard. It was decided to decline Both tenners. Cr Levien wished to know when the timber lor the bridge was likely to h? Slivered from Newcastle. He thought that some arrangements ought to bare been made with Mr Cross for allowing it to be brought in cue ofhia vessels. He proposed that the contractors be telegraphed to at once about it. Agre*^ to. Cr Everett wished to know whether any written communication had been sent to the Government regarding the division of the town into wards antagonistic to the decision arrived at by the ratepayers. Hi3 own name ■nd Cr Levien's had been connected with tbe matter, and he for his own part wished to disclaim anything of the kind. The Mayor stated that he had done nothing of the kind. Since the petition was sent, and it was found to be too late for the recent election, he had telegraphed to ask whether they would be disposed to listen to any suggestions from the Council if they thought fit to recommend three instead of four wards. To this a reply h»d been received to the effect tbat the nutter was entirely in the hands of the burgesses, who had petitioned for four wards. He had done nothing whatever to delay or prevent tbe petition being carried into effect. Cr Everett said he was very glad to hear this denial. Cr Levien denied having done anything at all in the matter. Cr Traak proposed that the newly-widened road at the Port be graded and gravelled at oace, as it was in a disgraceful state. Seconded by Cr Hounseil and agreed to. Cr Little called attention to the pathway in Russell-street, and moved that it be repaired at once. Cr Trask wanted to know when the repairs were to be made on the College Hill. They ought to be commenced at once. The Mayor said the funds were short, and he would not encourage an overdraft. He wished the Bank would not allow them a shilling. Crs Everett and Trask entirely disagreed ■with this. Cr Bunny was appointed a member of the Gas and Waterworks Committee.
