The Wanganui Herald states that at St. ' Mary's Roman Catholic Church, on Sunday last,- the Rev. Father Kirk took occasion in the mofning to refer to certain insidious matter which appealed in the newspapers of the day, and to warn patents to keep them out of their children's hands. The reverend gentleman (says the herald) was nofc understood to refer to the Wanganui papers specially, but his remarks were believed to have reference to the free discussion which is now takiDg place upon the Revised New" Testament* and the text of the Bible generally. It is estimated thafc from one to forty million francs in imitation gold bave been shipfroni Geneva to Egypt within a few years, and disposed of by an organised band of swihdlfefsj comprising men of prominence in Geneva, Marseille-, tod Alexandria. They have been arrested, and will he defended on the trial }}J the" celebrated Maitre Lechfiud, of the Paris Bar. The Sfc Petersburg correspondent of the Voltaire relates a ridiculous story of a li'esh attempt to assassinate the Czar. He states that a short time ago the Czar was about to step into his bath, .when he thought that the w-atef had a bluish tiht; whicli could not be produced by the medicated stilts and perfumes which are always thrown into it; Being surprised at this, he immediately sent for the servant who had prepared the batb, and questioned him about the unusual colour of the water. The man was embarrassed for an answer, and when ordered to get into the bath himself he refused to do this. On this the Czar had him placed in by force, the result being the death of the man a few hours later from the effects of the immer.sioii. Thfe analysis bf the water proved that it contained mosfc pernicious ingredients.
